Such is the renowned Houzouin jumonji spear. Houzouin Inshun is the second generation master of Houzouinryu Soujutsu, and his skill was said to reach the realm of the divine.

Houzouin Inshun. His secular name was Mitsuda Gennosuke. As the successor of the Houzouin name, he learned the ways of the spear and monk from In'ei, the founder of Houzouinryu Soujutsu. At that time, Houzouin's Soujutsu was already widely known because of In'ei's exploits. It was he who had the revolutionary idea of modifying the original simple spear into a jumonji spear, a cross-shaped spear, so one could cut, sweep, and hammer in addition to standard thrusts.

But In'ei abandoned the spear. "One who serves the Buddha while studying spearmanship is not sincere." "If one seeks to serve the Buddha, one must abandon the spear." Leaving those words to Inshun, his successor, In'ei passed away at the age of eighty-seven. Inshun, however, did not give up on the art of spearmanship. He came to the conclusion that as a disciple of Houzouin, the path of the Buddha and spear could be walked simultaneously, and he revived the Houzouinryu Soujutsu after In'ei's death.

There is no specific record of Inshun ever actually fighting anyone, but his skill and technique were praised as having "surpassed gods and the Buddha."
