The "History of Ming", one volume of the Chinese official historical books called the "Twenty-Four Histories", makes mention of a sole female general: Qin Liangyu.

Hailing from a minority group, Qin Liangyu married Ma Qiancheng, the governor of Zhong Zhou. She accompanied her husband in a battle to pacify rebels. Later, when her husband died in prison after being incarcerated following a civil suit, Qin Liangyu succeeded her husband as general, going on to expel many thieves. The soldiers serving her all carried spears made of a white ash wood, and they were known and feared far and wide as the White Cavalry.

While she was mild-mannered and modest, she also possessed the wit to respond to any kind of difficult situation. She was trusted by both her superiors and the soldiers that followed her.

Countenance of Loyalty: B While swearing loyalty to Master, her Master also puts their utmost trust in her. Even though her husband was wrongfully imprisoned, she still maintained her loyalty to Ming, and the ruling power at the time, Emperor Chongzhen, also placed great trust in her. White Cavalry Spear: B Normally a Noble Phantasm. A spear made from the wood of an ash tree; it was regularly used by both Qin Liangyu and her subordinates. There's no particular legend about the spear itself, but it has the modest effect of fascinating and distressing Anti-Hero Servants.

When Qin Liangyu was summoned to the capital, she assumed that she was going to be held responsible for failing to suppress thieves, so she gave all her possessions and property to her subordinates and braced for the worst. But what she received instead was a reward and four poems that praised her, said to have been written by the emperor himself.

Emperor Chongzhen was a highly suspicious person, and he was swift in purging others. While some scholars point out that Emperor Chongzhen really didn't have anyone he could trust since the Ming was already on the brink of political collapse, the emperor ordering the execution of the extraordinary military general Yuan Chonghuan was one of the final nails in Ming's coffin. Yet despite his distrustful nature, Emperor Chongzhen treated Qin Liangyu cordially, so much so that he gifted her with poems. At the very least, the Emperor had the sense to favor Qin Liangyu, for she had continued to loyally serve the Ming and the later ruling state, Southern Ming, until her death at the age of seventy-five.
