Hijikata Toshizo, vice commander of the Shinsengumi, the militia group that operated within Kyoto during the Bakumatsu Period. He ruled his men with an iron grip, and even the genius swordsmen under his command feared him as the Demon Vice Commander. While he displays the ferocity of a vicious oni on the battlefield, he also possesses keen insight as a strategist, making him rare among Berserkers.

A samurai who has maintained his "makoto" and fought throughout the ages by taking off his pale blue haori and replacing it with Western clothes and wielding a gun. He may be a Berserker, but he can converse normally. In contrast to his brutish fighting style, he is quite rational on the battlefield, and he shows flexibility by using anything that might lead to victory. If the Master who summoned him gives up on fighting, that Master will immediately be annihilated.

『Shinsengumi』 Rank: C+　NP Type: Anti-Personnel The Undying Makoto. As long as he, and only he, is able to maintain his existence, the banner of makoto, or "sincerity," will never die. A Noble Phantasm that weaves together both his discipline and madness. While active, damage to his physical body is temporarily nullified, and he is able to continue the battle using any available means until the opponent falls. However, this is a double-edged sword, as once the effect wears off, the damage sustained and saved up is unleashed all at once.

All members of the Shinsengumi, who all are master swordsmen themselves, admit they "never feel like I actually win against Hijikata, even if he loses." That is the demon of the battlefield, Hijikata Toshizo's sword of carnage. Such a spectacle is truly a reflection of his never-ending life of fighting. When activated, his surroundings become a battlefield where the air is shredded by flying bullets and filled with the echoing booms of gunfire. While it may appear like an Anti-Army Noble Phantasm that summons multiple people, its true nature is completely different. This is a manifestation of his madness, his insistence that the "Shinsengumi will never fade."

He embodies the Shinsengumi. Even should he be the very last of them, so long as he remains, the Shinsengumi will be undying. This extreme pride is what makes him whole. As he stepped over the corpses of his fellow comrades who fell one by one, he continued to believe in the banner of the makoto until the very end. He was the lone member of the Shinsengumi who continued to fight to the very end. ...And his fight still continues.
